Bio

Joan Veny is Emeritus Professor at the University of Barcelona and a member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans. He studied at the universities of Barcelona, Lovaina and Poitiers and is the author of over 20 books and more than 400 articles dealing with Dialectology, Geolinguistics, History of the Language, Etymology, etc. Among his most important books, we could mention Els parlars catalans, Introducció a la dialectologia catalana, and Paraules en l’espai, el temps i la norma. He is the co-author of the Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català (Barcelona I, 2002;VIII, 2016) and the author of the Petit Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català (I, 2007; V, 2015). He has been the president of the Associació Internacional de Llengua i Literatura Catalanes, of the Consell Supervisor del Termcat, and of the Atlas Linguistique Roman (Grenoble). He has directed the research project Variació i canvi lingüístic: Scripta i projecció dialectal and is the director of the journal Estudis Romànics. He is a founding member of ISIC-IVITRA. Among his many awards, we could mention the Creu de Sant Jordi de la Generalitat de Catalunya, the Premi de la Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca, the Premi d’Honor de les Lletres Catalanes, and the Medalla d’Or de la Comunitat de les Illes Balears. He is an Honoris Causa Doctor from the University of Valencia and the University of the Balearic Islands.
